What's that Free Software about? Isn't it just Freeware, since I can download free of charge? |
 |
|
|

Free software is a very interesting (and important) concept. It was brought
to mankind by Richard M. Stallman, the founder of the
Free Software Foundation. Free
software is copyrighted software with special licensing terms (the
GPL, "General Public License") that allow users to copy, ameliorate,
and redistribute software as long as the licensing terms don't
restrict those rights.
Too many people simply "refuse" to see the ideology behind free
software (unfortunately, that's the case of Linus Torvalds, the
Linux kernel author).
Free software is not only good quality software. Free
software tells you that your freedom is valuable. It tells you
that it's good for a society when people can share good software
with friends, without being stopped by a license refusing you
this right, and can ameliorate/bugfix programs if they are
technically literate. It tells you that proprietary software is
taking away your freedom.
Because of these reasons, please promote and use Free Software.

The game has been written in Perl/SDL and developed on a
Mandrake
Cooker
Gnu/Linux distribution. You will need:
- Perl: the most popular scripting language out there
- SDL: the "standard" cross-platform multimedia C library
- SDL_image: an image file loading library for SDL
- SDL_mixer: a multi-channel audio mixer library for SDL
- perl-SDL: glue between perl and SDL WARNING, perl-SDL 2.x is incompatible with Frozen-Bubble (since sdlperl.org site is down, you may want to get it from http://search.cpan.org/~dgoehrig/SDL_perl-1.19.2/)

If you're interested in the reason why you should not port Frozen-Bubble to proprietary OS'es,
you may want to read this nice explanation by Felix von Leitner.
Please contact me (send mail to: ) to propose direct links to binary packages for your favourite distribution; this would help both your and my users.

Special Demo Version (for i586) |
 |
|
|

If you only run a sucking proprietary OS like Windows, or if you use a lousy
Gnu/Linux distribution for which there is no binary package available here,
you may try the following alternative: this is a modified installation program of
Mandrake Linux for i586, which runs icewm and frozen-bubble 0.9.2, instead of
running the actual installation program.
- You can burn a 22 Mbytes ISO image, demofb.iso, which automatically starts the graphical environment; then, all you have to do is to click on the "Frozen-Bubble" button :-)
- If your CDROM unit is not bootable, you also need to download the cdrom boot floppy, cdrom.img; you can find information on how to make a boot floppy from Mandrake official 8.1 documentation
- If you don't want to waste a CDR, you can download the hard-disk boot floppy, hd.img and the program image, fbimg.bz2
(21 Mb); then make the boot floppy, save the program image on one of
your Windows partition (C:\ will make things easier later on) and once
you're booted, indicate the filename to the program (Unix filename,
e.g. without the C:\, and use / rather than \ to specify
sub-directories; if the file was saved under C:\fbimg.bz2, just type in
"fbimg.bz2")
Warning! You need at least 80 Mbytes of RAM in your computer to run this special demo version, sorry about that.
Please verify your downloads against md5sum's:
